After a dramatic victory in the NWSL Challenge Cup final over Gotham FC courtesy of a late goal from forward Alex Morgan, the San Diego Wave opens its regular season schedule at Snapdragon Stadium on March 23 at 7 p.m.
Kansas City and San Diego split both matches last season with each side winning on the road as the Wave clinched the Supporters’ Shield as the top seed for the playoffs. The Current has already played one game this season in a 5-4 home victory over the Portland Thorns on March 16 under new head coach Vlatko Andonovski.
Andonovski served as head coach of the United States women’s national team from Oct. 28, 2019, to Aug. 19, 2023, and was also head coach of the Kansas City Comets from August 2013 until November 2017 before moving on to coach the Seattle Reign. On Oct. 23 of last year, Andonovski returned as sporting director and coach of the KC Current.
KC was led in scoring last season by forward Debinah with nine goals and midfielder Cece Kizer with six goals.
San Diego Wave and the Current will meet again on Oct. 19 at CPKC Stadium with the Wave staying home after Friday’s match to take on the Reign on March 29. The team, led by head coach Casey Stoney, is looking to make the playoffs for a third straight year after reaching the semifinals in the first two seasons since joining the league.
