SHELTER ISLAND — SeaWorld successfully rescued a sea lion with a gaff hook protruding from its side on Friday, Oct.1, after a week of several attempts. SeaWorld rescuers had remained on call since Friday, Sept. 24 when the sea lion originally came ashore near Seaport Village. The adult male sea lion was rescued after he crawled onto a narrow stretch of beach on Shelter Island, according to a SeaWorld Statement released Friday. The sea lion is estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old. He weighs approximately 425 pounds and is 7-feet-long. It was taken to SeaWorld’s animal care center and was immediately administered a round of antibiotics. SeaWorld veterinarians will determine the extent of his injuries once his condition stabilizes. “The goal of SeaWorld’s animal rescue program is to give injured and ill animals a second chance at life and return them back to the wild,” according to SeaWorld’s statement.
