Torreys, Vikings harriers shine at CIFs
The La Jolla Country Day School boys cross-country team defended its CIF Division IV title last weekend, led by all-CIF performances from Alex Poyhonen (second, 17:05) and Dennis Roth (seventh, 17:46).
LJCD finished in first with 62 points, followed by Coronado’s 75.
Alex Fleischhacker and Jason McCallum finished 16th and 20th, respectively, while Lee Klitzner placed 17th. Vinny Pujji (39th) and Phillip Poyhonen (41st) rounded out the Torreys varsity team that will compete in this weekend’s State meet.
This CIF victory is the sixth in the last seven years for the Torreys boys squad.
The LJCD girls were unable to field a complete team this year, so veteran runners Ariel Abbott and Sasha Binderow tried to qualify for States as individuals.
Binderow finished 18th and set a personal record for Morley Field at (19:53).
Although the La Jolla High girls cross-country team missed qualifying for this weekend’s State championships by four points, a pair of runners did qualify.
Nihal Kayali and Courtney Avvampato qualified for the trip and will compete on Saturday.
La Jolla as a team placed fourth last weekend in the CIF competition.
