Fitness gear sale will benefit Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Discovery Shop in Point Loma will be hosting a fitness sale on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and Jan. 20. Fitness equipment, gear and clothing ” along with cookware and low-fat cookbooks ” will be sold at special prices, according to organizers.
Speakers will include physical trainers and nutrition experts. There will also be cooking demonstrations throughout the day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Members of Addie’s Personal Training Studio in Pacific Beach have already donated more than three dozen pairs of new and gently used athletic shoes as part of an ongoing effort to fight cancer.
“We’ve got everything to help customers get started on a more healthful lifestyle in the coming year,” shop manager Tami Rose said.
Discovery Shops are “quality resale shops” owned and operated by ACS. All items are donated and volunteers staff the shops. Proceeds benefit programs such as “Reach to Recovery,” which offers one-on-one support to breast cancer patients through the duration of their illness, and “Look Good “¦ Feel Better,” which teaches women hands-on hair and cosmetic techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during cancer treatment.
Discovery Shop officials also accept donations of quality merchandise. The Discovery Shop is located at 3609-C Midway Drive, next to Kinkos, in Point Loma. For information, call (619) 224-4336.
LJ JV cagers split pair
The La Jolla High School junior varsity girls basketball team (5-6, 1-2) split a pair of Western League contests last week.
The Lady Vikings lost to Cathedral Catholic 37-20 to open the week. The Lady Dons dominated the boards as they out-rebounded La Jolla 51-27, including 31 offensive rebounds.
Lilly Sedaghat and Taylor Templeton led the La Jolla scoring with five points apiece.
“Despite the score, we did a lot of good things today,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank said. “The girls never gave up and played really hard in the second half.”
La Jolla bounced back to defeat University City’s Lady Centurions 22-19 in a physical contest, despite missing three top players to illness.
Robin Mackelburg dominated the game with eight points, 15 rebounds and a La Jolla High junior varsity record: 13 blocked shots.
Sedaghat, Onezia Berotte and Jillian Frager all grabbed double figure rebounds as the Lady Vikings dominated defensively and controlled the boards to help secure the victory.
“This was a great team victory,” Frank noted. “The girls did an excellent job of adjusting to different roles and taking on more responsibility with the absence of a few of their teammates. We knew that we had very good depth on this team, and today’s game proved it.”
