Vikes drop pair on hardwood
The La Jolla High Vikings boys basketball team lost last week to St. Augustine and league-leader Scripps Ranch.
La Jolla (14-11, 3-5) played the Saints even in the first half, 34-34, behind Igor Seriba and Matt Jones, who scored 11 and nine points in the half, resp.
In the second half, La Jolla succumbed to the Saints’ pressure defense and fast break offense and fell 69-61.
In the loss to Scripps Ranch, La Jolla once again played a stellar first half, leading the Falcons 25-23 after two quarters. In the third quarter, however, Scripps went to its 6-foot-9-inch center, Kenton Walker, and the big man muscled his way to 15 points in the quarter, leading his team to a 62-50 victory.
Peter Sefton led the Vikings with 17 points and three 3-pointers. Andrew Heap pitched in 10 points. La Jolla travels to Mission Bay on Friday evening.
La Jolla JV cagers split pair
The La Jolla High School junior varsity (JV) girls basketball team split a pair of games last week to improve their record to 7-13 overall and 2-6 in league play.
The Lady Vikings were defeated by the Scripps Ranch Lady Falcons 45-12. Mika Marsh was leading scorer with three points.
Despite the loss to Scripps Ranch, it was a positive week for the Lady Vikes as they avenged an earlier loss by topping the OLP Lady Pilots 28-22.
Sasha Vaghefi carried La Jolla with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Deniz Kaplan had seven points and five rebounds, and Kaitlin Sharpe had five rebounds, three assists and three steals to help beat the Lady Pilots.
“I’m very proud of all the girls,” La Jolla coach Gary Frank said. “Today we beat a team that blew us out by 16 points the first time that we played them. The team has been working very hard, and the girls are improving all the time, and today, they proved it.”
The season ends this week with games against University City and Mission Bay.
