A freshman girl wrestling at the 170-pound level and a senior boys soccer player were the only Pointer athletes named to the winter sports all-CIF list, both appearing on the second team.
Ellie Wu battled her way to the section’s Masters meet where she was defeated for first place. That run earned her all-CIF recognition. Wu was also honored as the City Conference Athlete of the Year.
Ethan Denney (above) led his team with 10 goals and six assists for 26 points. He scored goals in each of the Pointers’ playoff games including two against La Costa Canyon. And in the CIF finals he scored the Pointers’ only goal. While Denney scored on his penalty kick against Steele Canyon’s Elder Ibarra who was CIF Goalkeeper of the Year, Ibarra stopped the Pointers for the championship.
Denney will continue his playing career at Maryville College in Tennessee. The Scots are an NCAA Div. III program and members of the Collegiate Conference of the South.
While there were no other Pointers named all-CIF, 16 athletes were honored on all-league teams recently released by San Diego Unified School District’s Athletic Department.
