Trunk it was the theme with decorations of travel trunks, to the San Diego Zoo’s beneficiary of the RITZ gala, the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley. Guests enjoyed the usual very unusual animal ambassadors learning sessions, a glorious dinner, and dancing to the wildly fun beats of the Wayne Foster Orchestra.

Steadfast Zoo supporters included Jeanne and Bill Larson of The Collector’s Fine Jewelry, Barbara Kjos, and Ingrid Hibben. Perpetual supporters included Audrey Geisel, Conrad Prebys, Peggy Matthews, and Pat and Bob Whalen all in perpetual spirit.

Speaking of spirit, Helen Woodward Animal Center recently held its popular gala. I remember having dinner in the ’80s at the grand but humble grand maitresse Helen Woodward’s home on the bluffs at the south end of Solana. The only admonition was don’t move any of the 20-plus rescue dogs from any seating. They had priority.
