Unified Sports for Special Olympics was held at Patrick Henry High School on Oct. 15 and proved quite a success.
There were five San Diego Union School District schools participating this year for flag football (Crawford, Hoover, Mira Mesa, Morse, and Patrick Henry). Unified Sports is all about inclusion, bringing together people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
Students from Patrick Henry’s Athletes Training Athletes club along with students from the Circle of Friends club worked together to put this event on along with Coach Chris Ahrens and Mrs. Tianna Reitman.
There were fans in the stands (parents, students, staff) and community support as well from SDPD Southeastern Division (Officer Lefler and Officer Morrision). The Athletes Training Athletes club practices every Thursday to increase familiarity and skills of the game along with building friendships and understanding. Many students won awards for individual skills as well as teams. Ultimately, Crawford showed up for the win.
Fun was had by all. So much love, support, and positivity comes from these events for all involved.
