A fast food customer told a jury on April 14 that a would-be murder victim ran right into him as he was fleeing a man who eventually stabbed him to death outside the McDonald’s restaurant on Midway Drive.
The customer identified Armando Manuel Parras, 33, as the man who was chasing the victim, Joshua Goodman, 44, who crashed into him while fleeing Parras on Aug. 30, 2023, at 11:30 a.m.
Deputy District Attorney Seralyn Fields asked Stuart Moul if he could identify the stabber in court. “He’s got a dark suit on,” said Moul, pointing to Parras.
San Diego Superior Court Judge David Berry noted for the record that Moul confirmed the identification of Parras in court.
Moul, who drives an Uber, said he lives in the area, and he was walking out the door with a takeout order when “somebody literally crashed into me and fell backwards.” Moul said Goodman then fell.
“There was a man behind him and he did a stabbing motion into his chest,” said Moul. “I saw his eyes. It was so horrific. He was lying there. It happened right in front of me.”
“He reached downward and stabbed into his chest. His eyes were horrified,” said Moul. “I followed the individual who had done the stabbing.”
Parras’ attorney, Monica Ruiz, asked Moul if the man who stabbed the man ran away, and Moul said this: “No, the man walked away. I returned to the victim.”
Moul did not see a woman, Brittany Wolf, 36, who picked up Parras in a van at the McDonald’s. She has pleaded guilty to being an accessory and was jailed on April 1 for not showing up for a probation interview. She will be sentenced on April 24.
The eight-man four-woman jury also heard testimony from three formerly homeless people who said Parras was involved in the theft of a bicycle from a homeless woman and had made a threat.
Jason Haines, 53, of Ocean Beach, testified he helped a woman get back her bicycle that was stolen by Parras and heard Parras make threats when people got the bike back.
“I’m going to get you all,” Haines quoted Parras saying. “I took it like he’s going to have to kill us. He pulled out his knife…He went crazy.”
Haines said Goodman was present and pulled a gun on Parras at the time, apparently before Parras pulled a knife. “He was a good guy, he was an ex-Marine,” said Haines, adding “that’s what he told us.”
The first witness, Jaclyn Cusano, 35, said she suspected Parras of stealing her bicycle and later found he had placed it online for sale. Cusano said she, Goodman, and Haines met up with Parras in Point Loma to retrieve the bicycle.
When the group recovered the bicycle, Parras told them “Don’t come back to OB,” according to Cusano. She testified she yelled back to Parras “You’re a bitch! You stole a little girl’s bike.”
Jurors heard opening statements on Monday in which the prosecutor asked for a murder conviction and Parras’ attorney asked for an acquittal of murder.
Ruiz told jurors Goodman has a history of threatening people. “I will shoot you. If I see you again, I will kill you,” she quoted Goodman as telling Parris.
“He was in danger, He believed he was about to get shot,” said Ruiz, referring to Parras. “I am asking you to understand him. He was acting to defend himself.”
Parras has pleaded not guilty. The trial will last several weeks. Parras remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
