In cooperation with SDPD community partners the United African American Ministerial Action Council (UAAMAC), the SD County District Attorney’s Office and the SD County Sheriff Department will be participating in a Gun Exchange for gift cards or skateboards 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Encanto Southern Baptist Church, 6020 Akins Ave. Born from the tragic and senseless murders of two promising teens (Monique Palmer and Michael Taylor) in 2008, this Gun Exchange event is intended to honor the memory of victims of gun violence and make simple the process of turning in unwanted firearms. Typically, these are firearms, which otherwise would likely remain unsecured or unmonitored in homes where they no longer serve a recreational, sentimental or self-defense purpose; a situation which increases the likelihood of their theft or misuse. This is a “No Questions Asked” event, with the only requirement for the firearms is that they must be functioning in order to qualify. Those wishing to participate should place unloaded firearms in the trunk of their vehicle prior to arrival. A uniformed officer or deputy will be present to provide instructions. All weapons collected will be destroyed.
