Five Guys Burger and Fries is tentatively scheduled to open Nov. 17 at 1020 Garnet Ave. The 4,000-square-foot restaurant will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The menu, while simple, offers 14 burger toppings creating a possible 250,000 burger topping combinations, said Ethan Janke, Five Guys area manager. Some of the more unique toppings include grilled mushrooms, jalapeño peppers and A1 Sauce. Five guys, all brothers, opened the first restaurant in Virginia in 1986 and still remain involved in the business, Janke said. “Everything is fresh,” Janke said. They hand roll the burger patties and hand cut the fries each day, and nothing in the store is ever frozen, he added. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon burgers and “Little” options for smaller eaters are all on the menu. There are 710 locations nationwide and the chain was introduced to California in 2008. The menu also includes Hebrew National Hot Dogs and grilled cheese or veggie sandwiches as well. The first San Diego area location opened at the North Island Naval Base on Coronado in October 2009. The economy has not deterred the chain from opening the new location that will employ approximately 40 people. “We have plenty of burger-craving customers who come in,” Janke said. He added that Five Guys officials are excited to set up shop in Pacific Beach. “We think this is going to be home run for us,” Janke said.
