The Friends of Del Cerro (FODC) held their annual meeting on Sept. 25. Each committee chairperson gave a report on completed projects:
Jackie O’Connor, president of FODC, welcomed everyone and thanked Anthony Hackett, the Senior Community Representative for our District 7 Councilmember, Raul Campillo for attending the meeting. Anthony gave an update from Councilmember Camillo and if anyone has a city related issue, you may reach Anthony via email at [email protected].
Jackie then asked the Committee Chairs to provide a brief update.
Front Porch Committee – David Preciado – College Avenue between I-8 and Del Cerro Blvd. Knowing there was a possibility the All Peoples Church would be approved by the City of San Diego which would significantly impact the College Avenue median, a Front Porch Committee was formed. The committee’s goal is to evaluate the impact the proposed deceleration lane on southbound College Avenue would have on the median. Once we know the outcome of the All Peoples Church, the committee will seek input from the residents of Del Cerro and the church, if they are involved, to design a viable upgrade to the College Avenue median. Other than the welcome to Del Cerro at the south end of the median, it has been about 60 years since the median has been touched. There are 42 empty tree rings between I-8 and Del Cerro Blvd.
Marketing and Membership -Mark Allan- COVID-19 put a damper on membership and community activities. That is now behind us, and we are now actively seeking new members.
Princess Del Cerro Park – -Mark Alan – The two major projects championed by the FODC was the repaving of the basketball court by the City of San Diego and installing new backboards on the basketball court donated by the FODC.
Community Relations – Jay Wilson – The concentration has been with SDSU and their property at Adobe Falls. We were asked by the SDSU administration to submit a proposal for the development of an agricultural demonstration project for a portion of their Adobe Falls property which they would oversee. A proposal was submitted, and we are awaiting a response.
Crime and Safety/Neighborhood Watch – Bob Hickman – The committee is continuing to install new Neighborhood Watch signs and working on establishing new Neighborhood Watch groups. If you are interested in establishing Neighborhood Watch in your neighborhood, please contact me at [email protected].
Del Cerro History – Jane Flofkorn – I am actively seeking input from long-time residents of Del Cerro to help expand the historical “Chronicles of Del Cerro” section on our website. If you have an interesting story about the history of Del Cerro, contact me at [email protected].
Three Friends of Del Cerro were reelected to the board; Mark Alan, Jay Wilson and Dr. Eric Frost.
Under Public Comment a Del Cerro resident residing on Lambda Drive (the back entrance to Hearst Elementary) commented on the on-going issue with speeding cars and the impact to the residents regarding the drop off and pick-up of a large number of students through the back gate of Hearst.
FODC agreed to work through Councilmember Raul Campillo’s office to ensure all possible solutions will be examined.
O’Connor closed the meeting by encouraging everyone to check out the FODC website at friendsofdelcerro.org and let us hear from you.
