Richard C. Atkinson, president emeritus of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), 9500 Gilman Drive, was recently selected by the United States Naval Academy to serve the board of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation.
Atkinson will serve a four-year term and join 29 distinguished countrymen who work on the governing board, which is meant to support, promote and advance the mission of the Naval Academy.
The new board member served as chancellor of UCSD for 15 years, as president of UC for eight years, and is known for having begun national college reforms in college admissions testing and starting different approaches to university admission and outreach.
Atkinson and his wife Rita live in La Jolla, where they support their community and philanthropic life in the area.
