Go ‘blue’ with Bell and Satterfield at Dizzy’s

On July 15, Dizzy’s will host a CD release show for the acclaimed duo of flautist Lori Bell and guitarist Ron Satterfield, celebrating the release of their new album, “blue(s).” Alongside special guests, percussionist Tom Aros and drummer Duncan Moore, the pair will perform the album’s nine blues-inspired tracks, all with the word “blue” in their titles, mixing originals with tunes penned by the likes of Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Both Bell and Satterfield are fantastic players in their own right, but their pairing is particularly inspired with Bell’s playing setting wonderfully against Satterfield’s chording. Fans of jazz and blues will enjoy this, as will anyone who enjoys instrumental music. Lori Bell and Ron Satterfield: Saturday, July 15, at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 8 p.m. $20. www.dizzysjazz.com. Anyone looking for dance floor action this week will want to hear Ray Bell and The Feel Good Band, performing at Humphrey’s Backstage Live on July 13. This quintet plays old school funk, as well as R&B, for music that’s full of groove and sure to fill a dance floor. The band is tight, with effortless beats and a sound that ranges from Prince to the Gap Band. With a dance floor right next to scenic docks at Shelter Island, this is a great way to start the weekend early.
Ray Bell and The Feel Good Band: Thursday, July 13, at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 8 p.m. $5. www.humphreysbackstagelive.com. What’s the best music venue in summertime San Diego? It’s most likely the Bahia Belle, the paddle wheel steamboat that cruises daily around Mission Bay, giving music lovers the San Diego skyline as a continually changing backdrop. The Bahia Belle books both DJs and bands with Fridays set aside for live music. Upcoming performers include ’80s hit-makers Private Domain (July 14), playing sets of rock favorites and the Ron Detroit Band (July 21) an excellent quintet that specializes in classic soul and funk. The latter turns in excellent covers of songs by the likes of the Bill Withers and Stevie Wonder, but also has excellent originals, such as “Faith, Love and Harmony,” which slot in perfectly with the other gems in their set list.
Bahia Belle cruises: Daily, at the Bahia Resort, 998 West Mission Bay Drive. 9:30 p.m. 21 and up. $10. www.bahiabelle.com. Legendary ’80s-era punk band the Dead Kennedy’s may no longer have frontman Jello Biafra, but after nearly 40 years, the songs still retain their power. The band still features the heyday trio of guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer D.H. Peligro, with vocalist, Ron (Skip) Greer, taking the lead role. Once considered one of the country’s most dangerous bands, the Dead Kennedy’s are now a nostalgia act, playing their now classic tunes, such as “Chemical Warfare,” one more time. However, despite the nostalgia angle, in these politically charged times their songs remain as relevant as ever. The Dead Kennedys: Friday, July 21, at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 8 p.m. 21 and up. $30-35. www.brickbybrick.com. Classic rock fans will want to check out a two band bill taking place on July 22 at the 710 Beach Club. The night will feature ’80s hair metal tribute band, Way Cool Jr. and Bon Jovi cover band, Blaze of Jovi, which specialize in the sing-along hits of Jon Bon Jovi and crew. With a set of crowd pleasers such as “You Give Love A Bad Name,” and “Bad Medicine.” Blaze of Jovi: Saturday, July 22 at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 21 and up.

Blaze of Jovi: Saturday, July 22 at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 21 and up. www.710bc.com.
The annual PB Concerts on the Green music series returns to at Kate Sessions Park, starting on July 23. Kicking things off will be long-running local cover band The Siers Brothers. The location itself is spectacular, with one of the best views in San Diego, making the addition of music icing on the cake. True crowd pleasers, the band, led by Steve and Mark Siers, has a wide ranging set list that might include anything from the Beatles to Dire Strait’s, the perfect soundtrack to a summer afternoon in the park. The Siers Brothers: Sunday, July 23, at Concerts on the Green, Kate Sessions Park. 4 p.m. All ages. Free. www.pbconcerts.com.
