A couple of new head coaches dot this season’s local scholastic girls golf landscape.
At The Bishop’s School, new head coach Bill Subang takes over, looking to lead the Lady Knights to another successful campaign.
“It looks as though we will have a good year,” Subang commented. “With everyone returning and most of them playing on their own, either with family or with their swing coach, they are bound to try and repeat as Coastal League champions. On the range, all the girls are understanding that they need to manage their game more. It will take us a little more time to get in sync with school starting and then having them go on retreat.”
Last year’s unbeaten Coastal League squad (6-0) was paced by Morgan Bisbas, Elizabeth Hooten, Jameson Kearney, Alexis Bohlmeijer and Anne Williams.
Bishop’s was to open its season Sept. 5 versus Carlsbad High.
A veteran head coach leads La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School again this season in Bill Cahoone.
LJCD (4-9 last season), entering its third season of girls golf, has three returnees with playing experience in junior Lizzy Ellison and sophomores Taylor Bornemann and Kelsey Alan-Lee.
“We are hoping that new players Ashley Pollack and Erin Tonkin can help, as well as Kasey Tsuidi,” Cahoone noted. “This will be a developing year for the team as two experienced players from last year did not continue with golf this season.”
At La Jolla High School, new head coach Brian Richter leads the Lady Vikings into battle.
Key members this season look to include Taylor Doyle and Bridget Kilgallon (both juniors) as returning starters. Each placed in the Top 10 of the City Conference tournament last year. The co-captains will be Laurel Gill and Kumiko Hayazaki (seniors), and they each placed in the Top 15 of the tourney.
“We’re a bit thin roster-wise, but the players we do have should fare as well ” or better than ” last season,” Richter said. “I would anticipate a top three finish in our league and top five tourney finishes for Taylor and Bridget. Laurel should crack the top 10.”
