San Diego Wave will play Gotham FC on Saturday, Aug. 19 at Snapdragon Stadium with seven games remaining in the regular season and trying to make a second-straight trip to the postseason. The team, led by head coach Casey Stoney, currently holds the sixth and final playoff spot in the NWSL with 21 points after 15 matches.
This meeting is the first between the two teams since June 4 when the Wave defeated Gotham 1-0 at Red Bull Arena thanks to a goal from midfielder Makenzy Doniak who came in as a substitute. San Diego last played at Snapdragon Stadium on Aug. 5 in their 1-1 draw with Angel City to close out the UKG Challenge Cup.
Gotham sits third in the table with 25 points and is unbeaten in the last three league games, which includes a 2-1 win over the Portland Thorns on July 9.
It’s not known if San Diego will have the services of USWNT team selections Alex Morgan and Naomi Girma, but will definitely not have midfielder Emily van Egmond and forward Sofia Jakobsson available since they are both playing for their respective national teams in the third-place match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, who represented Canada, will also be unavailable due to a one-game red card suspension she received in her last match on June 24 against OL Reign.
The Wave is two points ahead of Racing Louisville and Orlando Pride who they will face off with on Aug. 25 at Exploria Stadium after the game against Gotham. The Wave will then return home to take on the Houston Dash on Sept. 3 and Kansas City Current on Sept. 16 at Snapdragon Stadium.
