On Wednesday, Feb. 14, a wrong way driver who is accused of driving while intoxicated and killing a woman in Mission Valley had her preliminary hearing set for April 18 as she is still in the hospital recovering from injuries in the crash.
The dates were set for Briana Michelle Contreras, 24, who is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the Jan. 13 crash that killed Cecilia Echeverria, 49, of San Diego.
Contreras was driving a Honda Civic when it slammed into a sports utility vehicle driven by Echeverria around 12:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Several callers reported seeing a Honda Civic travel the wrong way on Interstate 8 westbound near College Avenue before the wreck occurred.
A San Diego Superior Court judge and attorneys went to her hospital room to arraign her in her bed last month and she pleaded not guilty. Bail was set at $500,000 and she remains confined under guard.
Contreras is also charged with a felony of driving the wrong way on a divided highway, driving with a measurable blood/alcohol level, and drunk driving with injury, according to court records. When she recovers from her injuries, she will be transferred to the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility in Santee.
Echeverria’s funeral mass was held Feb. 5 and her obituary says she is survived by her parents, sister, and nieces.
