The Ocean Beach Kiwanis Club is readying to reel in the fun with the annual lure of its free fishing derby off the OB Fishing Pier on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The derby, which shines the spotlight on youngsters up to the age of 12, features a morning of family fun and the challenge of fishing competition as children compete for prizes in several categories, including Most Fish, Smallest Fish, Biggest Fish, Ugliest Fish and Most Unusual Fish, Shiniest Fish, Most Guitar-Shaped Fish and Floppiest Fish.
Families are encouraged to fish together, but only those fish caught by youngsters count toward prizes. There will be ice cream prizes courtesy of Lighthouse Ice Cream, along with free refreshments.
Participants provide their own fishing gear, but bait will be provided by the Pier Bait and Tackle Shop. The derby begins at 8 a.m. and runs through 11 a.m.
The derby is co-sponsored by the Ocean Beach Recreation Center.
