UC San Diego’s 10th annual Dinner in the Library will take place Sept. 12 in the university’s Geisel Library building. The evening includes dinner and cocktails, a silent auction and a keynote talk from acclaimed author, poet and critic Jay Parini. Proceeds from the event will support the UC San Diego Library’s most pressing needs, including its collections, resources and services.
Guests will hear Parini’s perspective on “Books That Changed America.” Parini is the author of numerous biographies and works of nonfiction, including “Promised Land: Thirteen Books That Changed America.” His novels include “The Last Station,” which was made into an Academy Award-nominated film starring Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. Tickets are $225 per person or $1,800 per table. The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and 3D Art Exposition will bring in 300 tons of sand that will be carved and molded into sculptures by nearly 40 artists in three classes of competition on the B Street cruise ship terminal pier downtown through Sept. 2. With more than $60,000 in appearance, prize money and expenses at stake, some of the best sculptors from around the world will challenge the best in the U.S. Rusty Croft from Carmel won the event in 2012 and will defend his title.
The event started on Aug. 28 and runs through Sept. 2, during which artists in the World Masters class will have four days to create their masterpieces. Starting on Aug. 29, the public will be able to view the last two days of sculpting and have two more full days to marvel at the finished work. For more information, visit www.ussandsculpting.com.
