The annual La Mesa Oktoberfest tradition returns to the area Oct. 4-6 and fun is clearly on the menu.
La Mesa Courier talked with Laurel McFarlane, president of McFarlane Promotions, the event’s organizer about this year’s event and all that goes into making it happen.
La Mesa Courier: What has you excited about this 51st edition of the La Mesa Oktoberfest?
McFarlane: I’m really excited about how we’ve continued to evolve while staying true to our roots. This year, we’ve expanded the Palm Street Pub and Grub, with football on all day Sunday and karaoke on Saturday night, which adds a whole new level of fun. Bringing back the Ferris Wheel gives that classic fairground vibe, and the Pop-Up Pumpkin Patch and Fall Flower Crown station are perfect for families. Plus, we have three unique beer gardens, each offering something different. Whether you’re looking for the traditional Hofbräuhaus experience, craft beers at the Craft Bier & Seltzer Garten, or a more laid-back vibe at the Palm Avenue Pub, there’s something for everyone. That combination of tradition and new experiences makes this year’s Oktoberfest something really special.
LMC: How has the event grown over the decades from its start in 1973?
McFarlane: From its modest beginnings, La Mesa Oktoberfest has grown into a massive three-day celebration that now attracts tens of thousands of people. Over the years, we’ve expanded beyond just traditional Bavarian elements to include more family-friendly attractions like the Dackeldorf Dachshund Village and the Kinder Karneval. The addition of larger-scale games, an artisan market, and our three distinct beer gardens has really helped diversify the event, making it appealing to everyone, whether they’re here for the food, music, or the festivities.
LMC: While many locals love to attend the weekend of fun, do you get visitors from various parts of San Diego?
McFarlane: Absolutely! While it’s definitely a local favorite, we get visitors from all across San Diego County. With something for everyone—from the traditional German beer at the Hofbräuhaus to the family-friendly activities like the Kinder Karneval and the variety of food vendors—it draws a really diverse crowd. The convenience of the trolley also makes it easy for people from all over to attend.
LMC: Any big event depends on volunteers to play a key role in its success. Talk a little bit about the volunteers and what they do to help make this event a success year after year.
McFarlane: Our volunteers are really the backbone of the event. They help with everything from set-up to managing activities. They also help keep things running smoothly in all three of our beer gardens, ensuring guests have a great time. Their dedication year after year is what allows us to create such a welcoming, seamless experience for everyone attending. We couldn’t do it without them.
