The La Mesa Youth Advisory Commission earlier this week buried a time capsule capturing the lifestyle, memories, and future visions of La Mesa’s youth in the 2020s. This new capsule was sealed with reflections on current trends and expectations for the world in 2050.
“Our Youth Advisory Commissioners did an excellent job selecting items that represent this generation,” Vice Mayor Patricia Dillard said. We’re excited for future generations to discover this capsule and hope the contents inspire them to explore our history and consider how they can contribute to a better future.”
In February 2023, the Youth Advisory Commission unveiled a time capsule from 1992, which had been placed by the Youth Advisory Commission of that era with their aspirations for the year 2020.
To honor this legacy and continue the tradition, the Youth Commission placed their own time capsule, contributing a variety of items that ensure a rich representation of life in La Mesa today. Items included symbols of popular culture, personal accessories that
showcase current trends, items related to local experiences, and memorabilia from significant global events.

In addition to burying the time capsule, a new plaque was installed to replace the old one, marking the significance of the occasion. This plaque serves as a reminder of the spirit of La Mesa’s youth and their role in shaping the community’s future.
The ceremony was attended by local leaders, families, and community members, all coming together to celebrate the youth’s contributions and the importance of preserving history. The time capsule will remain buried until 2050.
