While summer is coming to a close, Little Italy continues to infuse its community with joy and energy in a variety of different ways as fall approaches. From vibrant murals to enriching events, here’s what the neighborhood is doing to keep that warm summer feeling alive.
Washington Elementary adds a pop of color
School’s back in session, and Washington Elementary is making sure to kick off the semester with some flair! With the help of Scarlett Baily, renowned San Diego-based Chicana artist, the school captured the essence of the beloved cornerstone school in the neighborhood with captivating murals on the interior and exterior walls. Using themes of flying high and reaching for dreams, as positive affirmations in Spanish and English dance through the halls, the art represents the magic unfolding in classrooms and the bright minds behind every desk. Within every corner of the artist’s endeavor lies inspiration and inclusion, bringing in even more love and warmth to a school that nurtures both personal and academic growth of its students. Washington Elementary, the oldest elementary school in Downtown San Diego, has been a cherished part of the Little Italy community for over 110 years, dedicated to fostering a welcoming and accessible environment for its students while continuing to weave the educational fabric for future generations.
Celebrate the past, present, and future of Little Italy
In conjunction with the school’s vibrant start to the year, the community is gearing up for a special event, the Little Italy State of the Neighborhood. Taking place on Sept. 26 from 5:30 to 9 p.m., the event pays homage to the rich history and exciting future of Little Italy. After an inviting cocktail hour and buffet dinner by local Little Italy restaurants, Marco Li Mandri, Chief Executive Administrator of the Little Italy Association, will take attendees on a journey to the past, present and future of the neighborhood bringing business owners, neighbors, and residents together for a night of pleasantries. The event will be taking things to the next level this year, with expansive views of the city on the rooftop lanai of Kilroy’s premier office building.
The community fun doesn’t stop there, attendees can enjoy a vast array of choices with a delicious buffet-style meal, dessert, and a refreshing beverage, beer, or glass of wine. Raffle tickets starting at five dollars give you the chance to win extravagant prizes. You can dance the night away under the stars as the sounds of Rat Pack Reborn float through the air, and make a “Cin Cin” or special toast to the community with one of the many unique sips from local businesses. Bring your famigilia and amico along for this inviting community experience!
Hard-hitting charity
Get ready for a night that packs a punch with purpose! The Bobby D Foundation is hosting the second annual “Punches in Little Italy,” an amateur boxing event on Sept. 14, at Washington Elementary School. Starting at 5:30 p.m., top talent from the San Diego Region will compete in 10 rounds of boxing to raise money for The Washington School Foundation, supporting the majority of programs that aid the homeless students at Washington Elementary.
“Punches in Little Italy” commemorates the two-year anniversary of the passing of Bobby DePhilippis, 72. Bobby D, as most knew him, grew up in Little Italy and was the owner of Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, as well as being a boxing promoter and a philanthropist. Together, both foundations work tirelessly to bring hope and support to the lives of underprivileged children by providing educational resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed. Bring your team spirit as these boxers compete for a greater cause!
