SPOTLIGHT

On June 19, Tio Leo’s will host a special benefit concert for jazz writer Robert Bush, from 6–8 p.m. The San Diego jazz community is coming together to raise funds to help cover Bush’s recent medical expenses, with an all-star lineup set to take part, including Gilbert Castellanos (above), Holly Hofmann, Mike Wofford, Christopher Hollyday, Joshua White, Mikan Zlatkovich, Marshall Hawkins, Justin Grinnell, Rob Thorsen, Duncan Moore, and many more. This concert is a wonderful way for both musicians and the audiences they entertain, to give thanks to a longtime tireless supporter of the area’s arts.

Robert Bush Benefit: Monday, June 19 at Tio Leo’s, 6333 Mission Gorge Road. 6 p.m. tioleos.com.

RECOMMENDED

Hard rock quartet Black Sabbath may be no more, but the influence of their music continues. Perhaps best known as the group that gave Ozzy Osborne to the world, it’s only natural that Black Sabbath would inspire numerous tribute bands, and one of the best is local combo, Sabbath After Forever, appearing June 10 at the 710 Beach Club. The group doesn’t bother with trying to recreate Black Sabbath’s look. Instead, they concentrate on getting the songs, such as “Iron Man” and “War Pigs,” note-perfect. They do a great job of honoring their namesake group in the process.

Sabbath After Forever: Saturday, June 10 at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 710bc.com.

Fans of classic rocker Steve Miller won’t want to miss an appearance from a tribute band, Pompatus of Love, appearing on June 14 at Humphrey’s Backstage Live. Making them more authentic than your average tribute combo, Pompatus of Love features original Miller band lead guitarist Greg Douglass, a unique player whose distinctive tones are instantly identifiable. He also co-wrote such classic Miller songs as “Jungle Love” and “Something Special.” With a set list that amounts to a live greatest hits album, this show will be a lot of fun for anyone who enjoys 1970s-era rock.

Pompatus of Love: Wednesday, June 14 at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 6 p.m. $5. humphreysconcerts.com.

Illusionist, mentalist, and performance artist, Scott Silven comes to the JAI on June 9 and 10 for four performances. Silven, originally from Scotland, doesn’t do magic in the traditional sense, instead performing seemingly impossible feats of mind reading, framed by a charming sense of storytelling. Silven’s shows are immersive, complete with audience participation, making for a unique experience each time Silven hits a stage. Attendees will be amazed by Silven’s powers of deduction.

Scott Silven: Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10 at The JAI at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, 7600 Fay Ave. $65-$85. theconrad.org.

On June 16, The Athenaeum will host a performance from the duo of vocalist Gretchen Parlato and guitarist-vocalist Lionel Loueke, as part of the venue’s annual Farrell Family summer jazz series. Both artists are veterans of the Athenaeum, but this marks the first time they will appear their together. The pair first met while studying at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, circa 2001, setting in motion two decades plus of collaboration alongside solo careers. Indeed, their current tour is in support of a new album, Lean In, which tells the story of their musical friendship in song. While this is a jazz show, pop fans will also enjoy such songs as “I Miss You,” which perfectly matches breezy Latin rhythms with Parlato’s dulcet voice.

Gretchen Parlato and Lionel Loueke: Friday, June 16 at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St. 7:30 p.m. $40-$45. ljathenaeum.org.

Acclaimed guitarist Fred Benedetti is at home in numerous musical settings, but possibly his most fun is when he performs his series of Beatles birthday concerts at Dizzy’s. Coming up on June 16, Benedetti and his group, vocalists Regina Moomjean and Julia Picone, multi-instrumentalist/bassist Jeff Pekarek, and percussionist James Morton, will celebrate Paul McCartney’s 81st birthday with an evening of music encompassing both Beatles and solo hits. What sets these performances apart is Benedetti’s impressive arrangements, recasting familiar songs such as “Band on the Run” and “Let Me Roll It,” but keeping the melody and spirit intact.

The Fred Benedetti Trio Celebrates Paul McCartney: Friday, June 16 at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 7:308 p.m. $20. dizzysjazz.com.
