On Dec. 23, the La Mesa Police Department held a DUI Checkpoint in the 4900 block of Spring Street.
During the checkpoint, which lasted from 7 p.m. until 12:30 a.m., 552 vehicles were contacted. One driver was arrested for driving under the influence (suspected alcohol) and eight drivers were evaluated for impairment in secondary screening.
DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
