The Mission Bay girls lacrosse team defeated Preuss School UCSD 15-5 on Tuesday evening improving to 11-2 this season while remaining undefeated in league play at 4-0.
“I’m so excited where we’re at right now,” said head coach Hayley Burke. “I think we have a lot of high goals for ourselves including playoffs.”
Despite losing its regular season opener to Point Loma 16-10, the Bucs managed to dominate their opponents ever since thanks largely through the efforts of goalie Sorelle Muto and teammate Ally Horton. Mission Bay responded by winning four in a row including a 17-0 shutout over Monte Vista on March 17 before its only other defeat of the season 10-3 to El Capitan on March 20.
“I think everybody in the league is a good team, so we’re focusing on coming out very prepared no matter who the opponent is,” Burke added. “We put so much work in the off-season, so we don’t have that problem of having to learn a lot of new things.”
Since the game against El Capitan, the Bucs have gone on a seven-game winning streak outscoring its opponents 106-24 during that span that also saw a 14-0 victory over Lincoln on April 15.
“These girls came extremely prepared for this season and you could tell that was the case within the first few weeks back in February,” said Burke. “I think the big difference is the preparedness and the level that we came in with compared to last year.”
Mission Bay has four regular season matches left all of them being versus league foes starting this Thursday at home against Morse High School. The two teams faced each other twice last season as the Lady Bucs come out with dominating 16-9 and 14-8 wins. Mission Bay will face Morse again on April 30 before its regular-season finale at home versus Lincoln on May 1. The Bucs still have hopes of repeating the 2022 performance when the team went undefeated in league play before losing to Mt. Carmel in the playoffs.
