Mission Valley, an open-air shopping center (mission-valley.com), will host a day dedicated to sustainability, community, and education during an Earth Day-themed event on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Guests will enjoy an Earth Day Sustainable Market, open throughout the event in the NOVO Brazil Court, that features local vendors specializing in upcycled, recycled, and eco-friendly products.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Nordstrom Rack Court, The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will showcase 25 interactive informational tents highlighting sustainability efforts, engineering innovations, unique ways kids can build the future through STEM, and ways the community can make a difference in protecting the environment. From noon to 2 p.m., on the NOVO Brazil Patio, there will be a Succulent Planting Class where attendees can learn how to plant and care for their very own succulent while enjoying a fun and relaxing atmosphere; space is limited and registration and a $5 fee are required to attend.
Guests are also encouraged to visit a host of Sustainability Partners and Interactive Booths from noon to 2 p.m. in the NOVO Brazil Court where guests can learn to make everyday choices that benefit the planet.
Partner booths include USAgain where guests can donate gently used clothes and shoes; in alignment with California’s Senate Bill 707 (SB 707), which requires communities to provide convenient collection points for used clothing, this UsAgain Clothing Drop Spot will provide a year-round collection point and, for every 10 bags of clothing collected, USAgain will plant a tree in areas where they are most needed.
Additional partner booths at the event include the San Diego River Park Foundation where volunteers will share ways to create a better future for the San Diego River; and SANDAG where representatives will share ideas for sustainable commuting solutions.
Mission Valley recently achieved platinum status in the 2024 SANDAG Employer Commuter Program due to its employees having a lower-than-county-average reliance on single-occupancy vehicles promoted by the center’s sustainable commuting programs which include monthly transit pass subsidies and dedicated parking spaces for ride and van sharing.
The center’s Earth Day event is free and open to the public; no pre-registration is required. The Succulent Planting Class has a $5 fee; guests can register for the class here.
