MOXIE Theatre announces their 20th anniversary season beginning Aug. 11, 2024, through May 18, 2025.
MOXIE will take a wild ride from the sands of ancient Egypt to the absurdist world of a debt collection agency, and travel back and forth from a teenagers’ treehouse in 2008 Miami and a home in Civil War Era Massachusetts.
And through it all we’ll wonder, do I belong here? What does it mean to be a part of the group, to be welcomed and accepted as your authentic self?
In this pivotal moment in history, as MOXIE grows into her adult years, we reclaim our stories and our individuality and proclaim proudly that everyone belongs here.
The shows include:
Cleopatra by Joy Yvonne Jones, directed by Andréa Agosto, Associate Director Vanessa Duron. World Premiere co-production with Loud Fridge Theatre Group. A spectacular rendezvous with the Queen of Egypt herself. Skin of pure gold and stories untold; Cleopatra awakens the original diva in a one-woman, interactive performance in this retelling of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.
Adapted by and starring San Diego Critics Circle Award winning actor Jones as the woman who would not be triumphed over.
Little Women The Broadway Musical, book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, directed by Leigh Scarritt, will be produced in rep with Our Dear Dead Drug Lord by Alexis Scheer, directed by Desireé Clarke Miller, Associate Director Vanessa Duron.
The Broadway musical based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women, meets the jaw droppingly controversial and terrifyingly funny Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, a thriller about high school girls whose seemingly harmless fun turns into something threatening when the limits of imagination are tested. A genre defying combination of two productions performed by a cast of San Diego women.
Together at last in a theatrical collision that captures the heart of girlhood, this genre-defying combination will be presented “in rep,” meaning that the same cast will perform in these two widely different productions, playing on overlapping dates on MOXIE’s stage.
Performance schedule will alternate the two shows on different days or the week, and times of day. Audiences will be able to catch both shows on the same day if they wish.
Lamoise New Works Festival – Bridging the Gender Gap. MOXIE is excited to introduce the first edition of the Lamoise New Works Festival, dedicated to developing new plays and musicals by women+playwrights.
At the culmination of a two-week workshop, audiences will be invited to join in celebrating new and exciting works over one weekend of staged readings of full-length and short plays, and one musical.
Do You Feel Anger? by Mara Nelson-Greenberg, directed by Yari Cervas, is a hard core comedy about empathy (or the lack thereof!) When a debt collection agency is forced to hire an empathy coach, absurdity ensues in this powerfully funny new play The New York Times called “ingenious and inspired.” Maybe someone will keep getting mugged in the kitchen, but at least they can talk about their feelings!
