SIO to begin water separation projectScripps Institution of Oceanography will address the quality of the seawater and storm water that it discharges into biologically sensitive areas of the ocean. The institution will begin a massive project to separate the seawater and storm water discharges into separate pipes, and then filter pollutants from the discharges. New pipes will have to be constructed, and modifications will be made to several buildings, as well as to the storage and supply tanks. Letter carriers will collect donations that day and deliver them to the Food Bank for distribution to county’s hungry. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m.Combined with the fine food and drink will be environmentally inspired surf and ocean art of renowned artists Aaron Chang, Bruce Brown, Leroy Grannis, Michael Cassidy, Wade Koniakowski, Drew Brophy, Lincoln Jay, Jeff Yeomans, Susie Ferry, Tony Spineto, Melissa Smedley, John Sterling, Don Doerfler, Jorge Macfarland, Stephen King and Shag.Attendees can watch a painting being created during the event. Silent and live auctions will include bidding on airline tickets, hotels and resort stays, spa treatments, dinners for two, surfboards and other items. Food will be on hand from local restaurants, as well as wine and beer from select local brewers and vintners.Finally, the evening’s program will include an awards ceremony recognizing San Diego County individuals’ and businesses’ contributions to protecting the coastal environment, speeches by local environmental leaders, a slide show, music and dancing.Proceeds will benefit the San Diego County Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, helping fund such programs as water-quality testing, education outreach, beach cleanups, pollution monitoring and advocacy efforts. Last year’s event raised $26,000.
