Multiple agencies rescue vessel in distress
San Diego Harbor Police assisted in the rescue of a “vessel in distress” on Sunday, May 18, using a night vision device, according to authorities.
Harbor Police Cpl. Joseph Sharp said his agency received a call to assist in the search shortly before 10 p.m. in the kelp bed area off the Point Loma lighthouse.
Harbor Police dispatched patrol boats and landslide units, joining members of the U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Lifeguards, a San Diego Police Department helicopter and law enforcement authorities from the Department of Defense and U.S. Navy.
Around 10:30 p.m. the vessel was located and Harbor Police landslide units directed the helicopter and police vessels toward the vessel, according to Sharp.
The rescue units reached the distressed vehicle, determining no one on board was injured, he said.
Sharp said the Harbor Police took the distressed vehicle in tow and removed it from the kelp beds until it was in a safe area where the boat’s operator was able to take command.
