PB has its day at the fair Fans of Pacific Beach will have their day in the sun when they celebrate PB Day at the San Diego County Fair on June 20. The Mission Bay High School cheerleaders and PB Kids Rock will perform live, and organizers will hold a free raffle with prizes from popular Pacific Beach-area merchants, including Gringo’s, Broken Yolk and Bub’s Dive Bar, among others. Library announces summer reading program Readers of all ages are invited to participate in Pacific Beach/Taylor Library’s annual Summer Reading Program, which will kick off June 15 and run through Aug. 14. In accordance with the program’s theme, “Water,” children ages 3 to 11 are invited to “Make a Splash,” while teens from 12 to 18 are encouraged to “Make Waves at Your Library.” All junior readers will earn prizes and raffle entries once they have finished 10 library books or completed 10 hours of reading. Adults can earn prizes by reviewing five library books. Participants can pick up a reading log at the library, 4275 Cass St. There will also be free events for children at the library on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. throughout the summer. For a full listing, visit www.pblibraryfriends.org. Friends of PB Secondary Schools raises $8,000 Local school supporters Friends of Pacific Beach Secondary Schools (FOPBSS) raised more than $8,000 for Pacific Beach schools at its Blues by the Bay fundraiser on May 23. The group’s major annual fundraiser was held at the Mission Beach Woman’s Club. “The local business support in Pacific Beach was outstanding,” said FOPBSS member Pat Hom. “Our community came out and we appreciate what everybody did.” The FOPBSS organizing committee of Hom, Pam Deitz, Laura Daley, Lori Glasgow, Cori Meara and Kim Schoettle organized the event. Big Daddy Blues Band performed, Karl Strauss Brewery provided a keg for the event and local businesses provided $22,000 worth of items for the silent auction. “It was an amazing night,” Hom said. “We had parents come from different areas to our auction and they loved it.” Hospitality industry helps clean business district The Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force, a committee of Discover PB, will host Hospitality Cares, a neighborhood clean up event in the business district. Hundreds of area hospitality workers are expected to participate. I Love a Clean San Diego and Enviro Clean have partnered with the local hospitality industry to assist with the event. The groups will participate in graffiti removal, litter abatement and sidewalk washing throughout the business district. Volunteers from PB Shore Club, Bar West, Olde City Grill and more will help clean on Monday, June 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cleaning will take place in the business district along Garnet Avenue, Mission Boulevard, Felspar Street and Hornblend Street. The public is welcome to participate. For more information call Sara Berns at (858) 273-3303. Skateboarder injured in hit and run At approximately 2:57 a.m. on the morning of May 30, a 22-year-old male was skateboarding on Olney Street through the Grand Avenue intersection when he was hit by a car that then fled in an unknown direction, according to San Diego Police reports. The male suffered a laceration to his head and a broken fibula. SDPD Traffic Division is investigating. Bay 2 Bay Regatta sets sail from Mission Bay All variety of manually-powered watercraft will take to local waters on Saturday, June 12 for the Peninsula YMCA’s 27th annual Bay 2 Bay Rowing and Paddling Regatta. Proceeds from the event benefit the YMCA’s youth swim programs. Bay 2 Bay features a 20-mile and a 5-mile course. The 20-mile race starts at Santa Clara Point in Mission Bay between 6:30 and 7 a.m., and the 5-mile race starts at Shelter Island. Both finish at Tidelands Park in Coronado. MBHS senior receives scholarship Mission Bay High School senior Ismael Perez is among 10 students who have received a $2,000 college scholarship through the Ronald McDonald House Charities®/ Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources® (RMHC/HACER) program for their first year of college. Winners were selected from more than 180 applicants based on academic performance, financial need, personal success and their commitment to community, according to scholarship organizers. Car thief sentenced A 19-year-old Pacific Beach woman who said she has always left her keys in the car while at the service station can rest easier now that a thief who stole her car has been sent to prison for two years. Kaylyn Senna stopped for gasoline at a downtown service station and went inside the food mart to pay for gas when she saw a man get into her 2000 Volkswagen Jetta and start to drive it away. Two people nearby stopped the theft when one man hit the suspect once in the face before he ran off, leaving his hat and jacket behind. Matthew Gilbert Mitchell, 28, was arrested. On May 27 he pled guilty to auto theft and driving under the influence of methamphetamine. Mitchell then asked San Diego Superior Court Judge Theodore Weathers for immediate sentencing, and got two years in prison plus a $260 fine after Weathers denied probation.
