Do nice guys finish last? Forget about it, says one organization, Nice Guys of San Diego, which recently named Dan Mulvihill as its 2006 Nice Guy of the Year. Mulvihill will be acknowledged at the Nice Guys’ annual event on Saturday, Sept. 30, 6 p.m., at the Town & Country Hotel, 500 Hotel Circle North.
“When they initially called me up and told me they had elected me as Nice Guy of the Year, I said forget it and I am not that nice of a guy,” Mulvihill said. “But really, I feel humbled and undeserving and feel like I should try to be nice all year.”
The Nice Guy of the Year gala serves as one of the organization’s major fund-raisers. The black-tie-optional evening features a hosted reception, dinner and dancing, as well as honoring Mulvihill for his efforts on behalf of its mission.
“The Nice Guys help people who don’t get help in an ordinary ways; for example, a lot of people who aren’t qualified for public assistance ” those are the people that the Nice Guys reach out to,” he said. “One of the great things they do for you is that they allow you to designate a certain amount of the proceeds from the event to the charity of your choice.”
Mulvihill selected the Nativity Prep School, which takes students who are from broken homes and really don’t have a chance, brings them in and opens them up to a world of opportunity, education and motivation.
Launched in 1979, the Nice Guys became a nonprofit organization with the mission of reaching out to local people who needed a one-time helping hand. Today the group is run completely by volunteers and 100 percent of its proceeds go to help those in need.
Mulvihill, who lives in La Jolla, serves as founder and chairman of Pacific Southwest Realty Services, a San Diego commercial real estate company. His philanthropic efforts include supporting the San Diego Ireland Fund, Catholic Community Services and Mercy Hospital, as well as Nice Guys of San Diego.
“I encourage everyone to send money to Nice Guys and I think it is a wonderful organization,” Mulvihill said. “Giving back to the community remains one of the greatest things you will ever do, because you are doing good for a lot of people now and for generations to come.”
Tickets to the Nice Guys Gala cost $200, and tables of ten are available for $2,000.
