A North Park man accused of killing his father’s roommate in the Alabama Manor apartment complex in 2023 was given a July 24 trial date on Monday, June 24.
Jonathan Robert Camp, 40, has pleaded not guilty to killing John Baquera, 58, in the apartment where Camp’s father also lived on July 2, 2023. Camp was temporarily living in the complex in the 3800 block of Alabama Street. His father, 67, has since moved away.
Camp’s case was assigned to San Diego Superior Court Judge Eugenia Eyherabide a few weeks ago for trial and on June 24 she confirmed a trial date for July 24 when Camp appeared before her.
Baquera used a wheelchair to get around and was increasingly upset with Camp over messiness in the living room and loud music while Camp was staying on the couch. Baquera yelled at Camp to move away the day of the homicide, according to Deputy District Attorney Hailey Williams.
Camp was ordered to stand trial for murder at a preliminary hearing in April by Judge Melinda Lasater in which his father and other police officers were witnesses.
Baquera was stabbed 16 times, according to testimony, and was pronounced dead at midnight by paramedics. Police officers found two knives with visible bloodstains in the kitchen sink.
Camp’s father had attempted to calm his son down during the incident, according to his own testimony. He also attempted to call 911, but Camp slapped the phone out of his hands.
Camp was ordered to stand trial on a charge of attempting to dissuade a witness from testifying in the incident over slapping the phone out of his father’s hands.
Police officers responded after his father found another cell phone and began searching the neighborhood with flashlights after Camp fled the apartment complex. Around 4 a.m., Camp approached an officer and was taken into custody.
Prosecution documents say Baquera’s blood and his DNA were found on Camp’s watch that was seized after he was arrested. Baquera’s DNA was found on both knives in the kitchen sink and Camp’s DNA was on both handles.
Camp remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
