In memory of Dr. Benjamin Harouni, a young dentist whose life was tragically taken just one week before his 28th birthday, two San Diego nonprofit organizations are coming together to provide free, essential dental care to local families.
Hearts Over Hate and Cura Smiles will host a one-day, free dental clinic on Saturday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cura Smiles facility located inside the Mid-City Church of the Nazarene at 4101 University Ave., San Diego.
Founded by Dr. Harouni’s family, Hearts Over Hate is dedicated to supporting families impacted by violent crimes by offering counseling, resources, and community events that promote love and kindness, particularly for those with limited access to such services.
In collaboration with Cura Smiles, a free dental clinic committed to providing sustainable dental care to people without access to healthcare, the event aims to honor Dr. Harouni’s legacy by offering care to over 30 patients who lack dental insurance or access to essential dental services.
The clinic will feature a dedicated team of volunteers, including five dentists, four registered dental assistants, and two hygienists, who will provide exams, cleanings, X-rays, extractions, fillings, and dentures. This event not only honors Dr. Harouni’s legacy but also reflects his lifelong commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in the community.
“We are honored that the Harouni family has chosen to partner with us for this important event,” said Christine Passmore, executive director of Cura Smiles. “This clinic represents more than just a day of free dental care but an opportunity to come together as a community to honor Dr. Harouni’s legacy and to provide critical services to those who need them most. It’s a chance to not only transform smiles but to transform lives, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue serving and supporting our neighbors in need.”
Donations are welcomed and will directly support the $2,500 cost of the event. Any additional contributions will be split between both nonprofits, supporting special projects and ongoing operational expenses. For Cura Smiles, donations will help transform more smiles and provide follow-up care for some of the patients seen at the event.
