In a tight contest with the CIF Division I crown on the line, the Patrick Henry High girls’ soccer team got the job done this past Saturday.
Goals from Kathryn Makhov and Breanna Ivie (game-winner) propelled the Lady Patriots to a 2-1 win over Mt. Carmel and an ensuing celebration. The title was Henry’s second CIF girls’ soccer crown in the last three years.
With the win, Patrick Henry will host the Division III Southern California Regional on Tuesday at 5 p.m. See the full bracket at: https://cifstate.org/sports/soccer/SoCal_brkts_2025/gd3.
To get where it is now, Patrick Henry had to win three CIF Division I games.
The Lady Patriots scored wins over Coronado in the quarterfinals (5-2) and Mater Dei (2-1) in the semifinals, respectively before topping Mt. Carmel.
“Our senior leadership carried this group when we needed that extra motivation,” Head Coach Jason Renfro remarked. “Our fanbase came out in droves and they were loud and patriotic. When we needed a lift, our sidelines gave the team the encouragement to get every ounce from our field players. ‘Pride in Patriotism, Strength in Unity’ has been our moto all season.”
For the players, the title is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
“I am just happy that our team has pushed through the ups and downs of this season and is really coming together when we needed to,” Naima Castro stated. For Abby Weiss, this season has seen so much progress for her and her teammates. “We’ve come such a long way from where we were at the beginning of the season, and we finally developed a strong level of trust in each other. I think that’s something that shouldn’t be discredited.”
As Amanda Bear noted on the team’s progress, “I’m just really proud of how much growth this team has made from having a rough pre-season, and a tough league, we finally came out of our rut, and proved to everyone how solid of a team Patrick Henry is.”
