MONDAY, Oct. 13
The League of Women Voters Ocean Beach/Point Loma Unit will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at the Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library, 3701 Voltaire St. The meeting will feature presentations on “The Pros and Cons of the State and Local Propositions” and “Information about the Port Authority.” Visitors are welcome. The Ocean Beach Historical Society will host a free program featuring a reading of “Between the Lampposts: The Literary Giants of Loma Portal,” a book about the history behind local street naming. The program takes place at 7 p.m. at the Point Loma United Methodist Church, located at 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. The book is a special neighborhood project coordinated by friends Elaine Fotinos Burrell and Karla Lapic. Silver Gate Elementary School will host its annual Harvest Festival, a fun and spooky experience for students, teachers, parents and the community as a whole. The event features games, food and plenty of Halloween fun with a costume contest, haunted hallway, cake walk, pumpkin patch and lots of games for youngsters. Tickets for games and activities are on sale for $1 each at the door. The event takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. at Silver Gate Elementary School, located at 1499 Venice St. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.sandi.net/silvergate. SATURDAY, Oct. 25 Check out the spooky fun at Loma Portal Elementary’s Monster Bash from 4 to 8 p.m. The community is welcome. The event will feature games, crafts, a cake walk, food and drinks, a costume contest, a photo booth, a raffle and, of course, the Dad’s Club haunted house. The Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach will host its ninth annual OB Howl-O-Ween Canine Festival and Costume Contest, with gobs of things to do and plenty of entertainment for four-legged friends and their owners alike. The street fair features music, food, a costume contest and prizes, along with a parade of pooches. The fun takes place at Dusty Rhodes Park at Sunset Cliffs and Nimitz boulevards from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and the cost is $7 for a single dog, $10 for groups of dogs and $10 for floats to enter into the costume contest and parade. The Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library will host a free program featuring poet retired Navy SEAL and artist Moki Martin, who will speak on the topic of “From Frogmen to SEALS.” The presentation takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the library, located at 3701 Voltaire St. For more information, call (619) 531-1539. TUESDAY, Dec. 2
The Ocean Beach community Christmas tree arrives at the foot of Newport Avenue by 11 a.m. The tree will begin getting decorated Dec. 3, then by local schoolchildren Dec. 4 when they bring their handmade ornaments between 9 and 11a.m. and visit with Santa. The OB Town Council Community Tree Committee hosts the OB Tree Auction at the Sunshine Company from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. with fun, excitement and your chance to start your holiday shopping.
