Peninsula Beacon contributor Scott Hopkins (above) has again been honored by the San Diego Press Club at the 50th annual “Excellence in Journalism” awards ceremony held earlier this week in Balboa Park.
Hopkins, whose writing and photography have appeared in the newspaper for the past 14 years, received recognition for four diverse stories in the “Non-Daily Newspaper” category and a photograph judged against all photographers in the county.
A first-place plaque in the category of “Feature Writing-Serious Subject” chronicled the community’s support for a popular Ocean Beach resident seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Point Loma.
Another first-place plaque for “Sports Writing” told of two very different games for last season’s Pointer football team.
The story of Point Loma High’s surf team earned Hopkins a second-place award in “Education Writing.”
A photo of a diving Pointer soccer goalkeeper’s penalty kick save was second place in the “Photography-Still-Sports” category.
And Hopkins’ account of last season’s Pointer CIF Div. III championship game was selected for third place in “Sports Writing.”
