Renamed for an ancient Roman Goddess, Juno’s has combined The Wine Pub & Restaurant and Coffee Hub in Point Loma Village while re-branding and introducing new menu changes.
The re-establishment of Juno’s is the next step in the evolution of the two businesses at 2907 Shelter Island Drive. Owner Roy McClish purchased both businesses at the end of 2021 from Sandy Hanshaw, who founded The Wine Pub in 2009, adding the Coffee Hub five years later.
Of his recent changes, McClish, who comes from a hospitality background including Humphrey’s on Shelter Island said: “We started roasting our coffee beans. We had to buy this big roaster and wholesale beans with a computer set up for it. It helped with costs so I didn’t have to raise prices. We do a light-medium roast, 100% organic. It’s our Juno’s brand now. It’s gotten good reviews.”
But when he assumed the helm from Hanshaw, McClish pointed out, “I wanted to run it the way she ran it, and not change anything so that the clientele weren’t affected.”
But it was time for a change. “This move (combining businesses) we probably should have done last year,” he said adding having two businesses open at different times “didn’t seem efficient space-wise.”
Consequently, now utilizing and expanding on The Wine Pub’s space, McClish has been able to add both lunch and brunch, which wasn’t possible previously.
Coming up with a new name for his combined businesses was a challenge. The restaurateur noted it took a year or more to decide after soliciting possibilities from just about everyone including his local customer base. Surprisingly, said McClish, “Nobody came up with Juno’s, which in Roman mythology is the goddess of love and marriage and protectress of the community.”
McClish loved both businesses noting “marrying them into one” under a traditional name that fit the tight-knit Point Loma community seemed just right.
Of his menu, McClish said he’s going “bowl-centric,” with all the lunch entrees displayed in some sort of bowl. One example is a healthy bowl breakfast item containing eggs, spinach, beets, and avocado all in one bowl. “We’re going to expand on that and do everything that is lunch-oriented bowl-style with rice and build around that. It will be a pretty presentation on the bowl,” said McClish.
The restaurant owner added brunch and bottomless mimosas have both been going great. He’s also currently in the process of rebuilding a new website for Juno’s. “Our tagline is Juno’s, coffee until wine, breakfast, lunch, dinner, music, wine,” he said.
McClish wants to get the word out to those unfamiliar with Wine Pub/Coffee Hub that they’re now getting a two-for-one deal with some welcome changes. “We still get people who come to The Wine Pub and say, ‘I never knew you existed and we’ve been living in Point Loma for 40 years.’ And that still exists to this day,” he said.
So how do you overcome that? “The name change,” answered McClish. “People hear Wine Pub and they think, ‘Just wine.’ And it’s been a full dinner menu since we took over.”
So McClish wants to alter that public perception of his establishment, reversing it from being perceived as, a wine place with great dinners, to be thought of first as, “Great dinner and, ‘Oh wow, you still do lots of wines.’
“My wine list and by-the-glass lists are both huge,” he noted.
