Two teams recorded undefeated records in league play, leading a cluster of Point Loma High winter sports teams into post-season CIF playoffs. The boys’ basketball team blasted Kearny 53-40 last week in its regular season finale, posting a perfect 12-0 mark in Central League play to earn the first PLHS league title since 1997. Both Dillon Fitzmorris (17.8 points per game) and Jamal Agnew (16.6) led the team offensively, with each connecting on 55 three-point shots. Defensively, Fitzmorris (63 steals), Agnew (58) and Grant Wilburn (61) created havoc with their hustle, disrupting opponents’ offenses. The Pointers and head coach Chris Brisco were guaranteed a home game (played Feb. 20) when playoff pairings were announced last weekend. The Pointer girls’ soccer team also landed atop the City League standings for the second time in the last three years. Last week, the Pointer pitch was the place as the Pointers put a big exclamation mark on their season with an 8-0 whipping of City League foe Madison to finish conference play with a 6-0-2 record. On the season, sophomore Taylor Hopkins netted five goals for the team lead, with seniors Jewell Roth, Caelle McKaveney and freshman Jordan Patane all recording four.  In goal, junior Jordan Green (12 games, four shutouts) and senior Mia Sakasegawa (eight games, two shut-outs) shared honors. Head coach John Murphy and his team were guaranteed a home game (played Feb. 19) in CIF playoff pairings. Elsewhere, girls’ basketball (Dave Aros, head coach) finished its regular season 7-5 in league play with a close (43-39) loss to Central League champion Kearny. The 12-7 overall record should earn the team a CIF playoff spot. Boys’ soccer (Elliott Savitz, head coach) was 12-3-7 overall, but fell to 2-2-4 in Western League play against the likes of powerful University City and St. Augustine. Seeding meetings will determine the Pointers’ fate. In wrestling, the City Conference Championship meet was held recently. Head coach Phil Moore’s Pointers finishing fourth of 19 schools.  Top Pointers were: • Keegan Bell: second place, 154 pounds; • Bailey Dugdale, second place, 172 pounds; • Chase Scillato, third place, 128 pounds; • Jovanny Sanchez, third place, 222 pounds; • Michael Harris, fourth place, 122 pounds and • Michael Serrano, fourth place, 287 pounds. These Pointer wrestlers competed last weekend at the CIF finals, hosted by Cathedral Catholic. EXTRA POINTS • Both Pointer boys’ and girls’ basketball teams held “Senior Night” Feb. 8 to honor departing players. The girls defeated Clairemont 54-15 and the boys dispatched the Chieftains 63-40 to make for a big night. • The girls’ soccer team’s “Senior Day” included the parents speaking to the crowd about their daughters prior to the game. It must have worked. The girls went out and destroyed Madison in an 8-0 blitz. • Girls’ water polo had a rough year in the pool, swimming to a 6-22 record overall. The team, with three freshmen and six sophomores on a 14-girl roster, is already looking forward to the 2013-14 season. • Spring is the busiest season for prep athletes. No less than 13 teams are currently finalizing rosters for play through Memorial Day. Starting play soon are boys’ baseball, golf, tennis and volleyball. Girls’ softball is under way, while co-ed teams include badminton, swimming, track and field, and lacrosse. CIF Playoffs, Division II, first round: • Boys’ basketball:  No. 8-seeded Westview at No. 9 Point Loma, Feb. 20 • Girls’ basketball: No. 16 Point Loma at No. 1 Serra, Feb. 19 • Boys’ soccer: No. 10 Steele Canyon at No. 7 Point Loma, Feb. 20 • Girls’ soccer: No. 6 Rancho Bernardo at No. 11 Point Loma, Feb. 19 (16 seeded teams in each sport)
