The Point Loma High School football team has been seeded as the No. 5 team in Div. II of the upcoming San Diego Section CIF playoffs. The Pointers (5-5 overall) will host No. 12 Valley Center Jaguars (7-3 overall, 5-1 in Valley League) on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The winner advances to play No. 4 Poway on Nov. 15. The finals are scheduled for Nov. 29 at Southwestern College with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Last week, the Pointers were outmatched in a 55-6 loss to Cathedral Catholic to end the regular season. The only Pointer score was a 13-yard pass from QB Henry Heuser to Romeo Carter in the fourth quarter.
The new playoff seeding system uses computerized rankings of schools based on their 2024 season record and the strength of opponents.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The Pointers finished 9-15 overall, 2-6 in Western League. They were seeded No. 11 in Div. I have been on a playoff roll. They have eliminated No. 6 Mission Vista (3-2) and No. 3 Christian (3-1) and are playing in the semifinal round at No. 2 Eastlake in Chula Vista at 6 p.m. on Nov. 5. The finals are set for Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Southwestern College.
GIRLS GOLF
Sophomore Anna Wang qualified and played in match play, shooting a 43 and 36 on the Balboa front and back courses.
Teammates Julie Wood had a 64, Anna Ohayon shot 67, Ashley Rojas shot a 67, and Sophie Backus a 72 on the Balboa Red course.
In Western League standings the Pointers finished last. Individually, Wang finished third, Rojas (24th), and Lily Inzunsa (32nd).
Wood is currently playing in the CIF Tournament with Day 2 set for Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Torrey Pines North course.
GIRLS TENNIS
Pointer girls are seeded No. 9 in Div. I. They defeated No. 8 Mater Dei 11-7 before losing to eventual champion No. 1 La Jolla Country Day 11-7. Individually, Makayla Pascale lost a first-round match while Noel Allen is set to play a feed-in round opponent this Wednesday, Nov. 6 leading to a round of 16 with finals set for Nov. 9 at Balboa Tennis Club.
BOYS WATER POLO
The Pointer pool boys finished their season 18-9 overall, 6-0 in the Eastern League. They are seeded No. 5 in Div. I will host No. 12 Rancho Bernardo on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Bud Kearns pool for a 5 p.m. match. Finals are held at the Coggan Aquatic Complex at La Jolla High at 5 p.m. on Nov. 16.
CHEERLEADING
A tournament is scheduled for Dec. 14 at Carlsbad High. The competition is broken into Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice squads. Also, Non-tumbling and Coed non-tumbling and Game Day categories are on tap. Each division will be divided into small groups (5-15 members) and large (16-36 members). The state competition is scheduled for Feb. 1 at Mira Costa High School.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Pointers are in Div. III (based on enrollment) with the boys championship meet coming at 12:20 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Morley Field in Balboa Park. Each school is allowed to enter seven runners in the race. The team’s score is the sum of the places of the first five runners to finish. The top four teams qualify for the state meet.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The girls will run at 10:40 a.m. on the same day and at the same location. All other boys information applies. The state meet is held annually at Woodward Park in Fresno.
GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL
The team is currently 4-10, with a final game on Nov. 4 against Scripps Ranch. It will not appear in the CIF playoffs.
