Power and pitching are two words that describe the 2025 Pointer softball team.
Head coach Billy Hunyady, now in his seventh year, noted his team has already hit seven home runs by five different players in the first eight games. Current players who have blasted round-trippers include freshmen Sienna Balistreri and Ella Poulin, two each, sophomore Leyton MacPherson, seniors Annika Isaacson and Nanako Schroth, one each.
“Last year, the team hit three all year,” Hunyady noted.
And the pitching?
“We have two strong freshman pitchers (River Hargett and Poulin) arguably giving us three number ones (with junior Ryoko Schroth) on the team,” Hunyady added.
Other signs point to an improved team with more promise.
“There are three or four girls on our JV team that would have made every other varsity team I’ve coached at Point Loma High,” he said. “There is more and more talent coming from the Peninsula Youth Softball League and it’s an exciting time to be a part of our program.”
But the Pointers find themselves in a very challenging league.
This year’s Western League teams are all CIF Div. I programs (Christian, Cathedral Catholic, Academy of Our Lady of Peace, and Patrick Henry) except for Point Loma, a Div. II team. Last year the Pointers finished 4-4 (16-15 overall) for second place in the Eastern League. Both Christian and Point Loma were moved up to the Western League.
“Christian (8-0 in league, 24-8-1 overall) is probably the favorite this year,” Hunyady predicted, “But we like our chances. We are 3-1-1 against pre-season top 10 teams.”
In 2023 and 2024 Hunyady took his teams to semi-final CIF championship games. “We think we have a good chance in the next couple of years,” Hunyady said, “To win the first-ever softball CIF championship for Point Loma.”
The Pointer team also features three sets of sisters including sophomore Ryoko and senior Nanako Schroth, sophomore Leyton and junior Avery MacPherson, and sophomores Ella and Lola Mezzadri.
Hunyady is proud to announce all the coaches in his program are Pointer alums.
He and JV coach Chris Ghio (also in his seventh year) played on the 1980 baseball team and veteran travel ball coach Scott Berndes, Class of 1969, has been added to the staff. Berndes has coached travel softball for 30 years and Hunyady is counting on him to help develop the four freshmen on the roster among other duties.
Point Loma High’s softball field is located at the Correia Middle School sports complex on the southeast side along Famosa Boulevard above Bill Cleator Community Park.
