San Diego City College has been awarded $850,000 through the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Rebuilding Nursing Infrastructure (RNI) Grant. The competitive grant, part of a statewide initiative to address California’s healthcare workforce shortage, will bolster the college’s efforts to expand and modernize its nursing program.
San Diego City College was one of 76 applicants seeking funding and one of only 59 colleges statewide to be selected for an award. The grant will support efforts to grow enrollment capacity, enhance student support services, invest in modern simulation technology, and increase pathways for students pursuing careers as registered nurses.
“This funding is a major win for our students and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Dometrives Armstrong, associate dean of Nursing Education. “The grant will allow us to expand access to our high-quality nursing program while helping to meet the critical demand for healthcare professionals in our region.”
The RNI Grant program, administered by the Chancellor’s Office Workforce and Economic Development Division, aims to rebuild and strengthen nursing education infrastructure across California’s community colleges. Its goal is to create more robust and sustainable pipelines of nursing graduates equipped to meet the state’s healthcare needs.
City College’s nursing program has long been a vital contributor to the local healthcare workforce. With this new investment, the college is poised to train more nurses and deliver on its mission to prepare students for in-demand, life-saving careers.
Ranked the No. 1 associate degree nursing program in San Diego for 2025, City College’s program is known for its exceptional faculty, hands-on clinical training, and a first-time NCLEX pass rate of 100% in four of the last five years.
Pending final approval by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors in May, grant activities are expected to begin July 1.
