San Diego FC made Seattle Sounders fans endure a sleepless night on Saturday after a dominating 3-0 victory at Snapdragon Stadium.
Like their previous match against LAFC on March 29, SDFC scored three times in the first half, starting with a second-minute goal by midfielder Jeppe Tverskov off a beautiful assist from teammate Chucky Lozano, who juked two defenders to find the 32-year-old Dane.
That sent the crowd into a frenzy as the home team continued the offensive pressure when forward Anders Dreyer found teammate Anibal Godoy in the 41st minute, who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Stefan Frei. San Diego FC was not done with its onslaught as Lozano received a perfect pass while streaking down the middle of the field from defender Jasper Löffelsend and scored his first goal of the regular season three minutes into first-half added time.
The second half saw a more controlled tempo with SDFC still creating some chances to extend the lead and Seattle having a few, with the best opportunity coming in the 87th minute after a turnover inside the box saw forward Danny Musovski be denied from close range by goalkeeper CJ dos Santos.
“You have to find moments in a game where you have to dig deep, and we had to do that at times,” said San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas. “These guys inspire me every single day. The conviction for the style of play is just so apparent.”
The victory puts San Diego back in second place in the Western Conference. San Diego will go on a two-game road trip to Colorado on April 12 and Charlotte on April 19 before returning home for a rematch against Real Salt Lake on April 26.
