The first-of-its-kind “Border Bragging Rights Series” tips off with the San Diego Sharks vs. Tijuana Zonkeys at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mira Mesa High School. This contest is the first in a home-and-home series between the region’s top basketball franchises.
The game will feature the Sharks, gearing up for their third TBL season after back-to-back playoff appearances, taking on the Zonkeys, a premier team in Mexico’s highly-regarded CIBACOPA league. This exhibition match is not only a first for both teams, but the Sharks will be the first team in TBL history to play a CIBACOPA team.
“This is the type of game that players, coaches, and fans all get excited for,” Sharks CEO Tyler Sickmeyer said. “The atmosphere will be electric and we look forward to continuing this friendly rivalry with our friends on the Zonkeys for years to come.”
Admission is free in advance at SharksBasketball.com or $10 at the door. Fans will also have unlimited complimentary popcorn during the contest, a staple of Sharks home games.
The Zonkeys and Sharks will continue the “Border Bragging Rights Series” a week later on Feb. 17 in Tijuana as both teams continue to prepare for their upcoming seasons tipping off in March.
To mark this historic occasion, a new traveling trophy depicting the rivalry will be awarded to the winning team, creating a tradition that will continue for years. It’s a chance for the Sharks and Zonkeys to showcase their skills and represent their cities internationally.
