San Diego Wave FC looks to continue its impressive play that has seen it go from the sixth to third seed in the NWSL standings when it takes on the Houston Dash on Sunday, Sept. 3 at Snapdragon Stadium.
Wave has 27 points, the same as the North Carolina Courage, and is coming off back-to-back 2-1 victories over Gotham FC and Orlando Pride. The Wave will finally have all its internationals back for the match versus Houston now that forward Sofia Jakobsson and Emily van Egmond have joined the squad after representing their respective national teams in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
San Diego dominated Houston 3-0 when the two sides last met on May 20 at Shell Energy Stadium with goals from forward Alex Morgan, midfielder Sierra Enge, and defender Madison Pogarch. Houston sits in 10th place with 20 points and is coming off back-to-back draws against Washington Spirit and KC Current.
San Diego Wave will not have head coach Casey Stoney on the sidelines for the game after receiving a red card late in the second half in the match versus Orlando with assistant coach
Louis Hunt taking over her duties. The Wave is two points behind the league-leading Portland Thorns, which it will face at Providence Park on Sept. 30 in a game that could end up deciding what team finishes on top of the regular season standings with only five games left.
