San Diego Wave FC announced on Tuesday that the club has signed head coach Casey Stoney to a multi-year contract extension through the 2027 season with a mutual option for 2028. The 2022 NWSL Coach of the Year led the Wave to the top seed and best regular season record in the league last season and clinched the Supporters’ Shield.
“I am happy to extend my stay here in San Diego, a place my family and I call home,” said Stoney. “What we have achieved as a club over the first two seasons is a testament to the investment of our ownership and the hard work of everyone involved.”
The 21-10-13 record over her first two seasons gives the Wave the most regular season wins for any NWSL team during that span, which doesn’t account for the back-to-back trips to the semifinals in 2022 and 2023.
“This is just the beginning and I am fully committed to building and developing this team,” Stoney added. “I am proud to be a part of this club, in this city, and I will continue to give everything I have to bring even more success to this incredible community.”
The Basildon, England native was a talented defender during her playing days as she capped more than 100 matches for the England women’s national football. Stoney was an integral part of the England teams that reached the UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 final and the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007 and 2011.
In 2012, Stoney succeeded Faye White as the England captain and also became captain of the newly formed Team Great Britain squad at the 2012 London Olympics.
