Both goals came in the second half courtesy of a 51st-minute score from inside the box by Kyera Utush (pictured) that came off a corner kick and an 89th goal from Denise Castro on a solo breakaway opportunity. Aztec goalkeeper Alexa Madueno earned a clean sheet and reached the 300th save mark in the 52nd minute as San Diego State finished the regular season with a 14-3-2 record.
The only losses for the Aztecs came against Long Beach State, Washington State, and Nevada. San Diego State finished with a 9-1-1 record in conference play.
“Any time you win a championship it’s special,” said head coach Mike Friesen. “I’m so proud of this team for the work they have done from January until now to put us in a position. What we have been willing to do daily is going to put you in a position to win a title, and we were able to do so tonight.”
The victory over New Mexico clinched the 12th overall Mountain West title for SDSU and the first since 2019.
“As a coach, you think this is going to happen every year, and we’ve been close the last couple of years,” Friesen said. “But then you realize how special these moments are and how hard it is to win a championship.”
Friesen is SDSU women’s soccer team’s all-time leader in coaching wins.
San Diego State will play its next match on Nov. 1 in the semifinal round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament as it awaits the winner of the Colorado State vs. Fresno State match.
