I was heartened to read the article in the Aug. 14 edition describing San Diego Unified School District’s new climate change initiative. Hopefully, this initiative will result in ending the extremely environmentally unfriendly activity of busing students across San Diego. This will result in a huge reduction in harmful carbon dioxide emissions. At present, at least 13 buses are used to transport children to and from La Jolla High School every day from areas of San Diego that are at least 10 miles away. A simple calculation shows at least 6,000 gallons of fuel could be saved each year if these children were educated in their own neighborhoods. The school district must end this decades-old environmentally harmful busing policy. Robin George Williams
