Mission Bay Sportcenter has long been a recreational fixture at Santa Clara Place. This past spring, the center expanded to two new locations on Mission Bay. In April, the center expanded its facilities to the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina on Harbor Island. The following month, MBSC expanded to the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. MBSC manager Zach Funston said both of the new facilities are top of the line. “Everything is brand new equipment,” Funston said. “The facilities are brand new. It’s beautiful.” Both of these off-site locations are on the water. And Funston said both offer the same amenities as the original Mission Bay location, which is no worse for wear after more than 30 years of operation. “When people think of boat rentals, they think of run-down places,” Funston said. Funston said the facility has both brand-new rental equipment and docks, erasing the notion that boat rental facilities are typically shabby. In addition to boasting new equipment, the MBSC has locker rooms for patron use and classrooms used to teach safety for watersports classes. The 7,000-square-foot facility also offers American Sailing Association sailing certification classes. The Mission Bay Sportcenter offers equipment rental and private lessons in a variety of watersports activities. These include wakeboarding, waterskiing, sailing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, rowing and kiteboarding. The center also offers boating and sailing lessons for all levels of experience. This summer, the center is also offering some unique programs, including a bay-to-bay Jet Ski tour. “On that tour we take them down Mission Bay into San Diego Bay,” Funston said. “They get to experience the coastline, the Coronado Bridge and historical sites.” Another program is the fireworks tour. Funston said each night, these tours take groups around Mission Bay to get a prime spot for the nightly SeaWorld fireworks. MBSC also has youth camps for kids ages 4 to 16. These camps have both morning and afternoon sessions. Camps include marine science and snorkeling. “It’s a unique opportunity for kids to experience a variety of watersports,” Funston said. “Everything from different levels of sailing to waterskiing and wakeboarding.” The Mission Bay Sportcenter is located at 1010 Santa Clara Place on Mission Bay.
