La Jolla alumna honored at UCSD
La Jolla High alumna Christina Sloyer, a member of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) track and field team, was recently named a recipient of the California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Team for 2007-08.
A total of 79 UCSD student-athletes were named to the squad. UC San Diego had the most all-academic selections of the 11 CCAA member institutions.
Each student-athlete must be a varsity letter-winner who competed in one of 13 CCAA-sponsored sports (men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s tennis, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball and softball) during the 2007-08 academic year.
Student-athletes must also have a grade-point average of 3.40 or higher in a minimum of 24 semester/36 quarter units completed at the certifying institution. Non-graded units may be included in the 24/36 unit total.
San Diego Shores squad wins title
The San Diego Shores Water Polo Club captured the gold medal in the Platinum 10-and-under coed division at the recent 2008 Junior Olympics held in Irvine.
San Diego scored a 12-8 victory against Huntington Beach Water Polo Club in the final match, with La Jolla resident Evan Elig being named the MVP of the tournament in the 10-year-old and under division.
Sign up for Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride
Event organizers are still accepting registrations for the 35th annual Midnight Madness Fun Bicycle Ride that will run a 20-mile circuit starting from 1600 Pacific Highway through Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Old Town and Downtown San Diego beginning at midnight Saturday, Aug. 16.
Organizers said they expect between 1,500 and 2,000 riders to participate in one of SoCal’s most renowned bicycling events.
Riders can pre-register for the event through Aug. 14 at a cost of $28. Those who wish to register the day of the event will pay $35.
Registration can be done online by visiting www.active.com, or by visiting www.sandiegomidnightmadness.org. Paid registration includes an event T-shirt, admission to contests and festivities, participation in the ride, a goodie bag and safety support.
The event is co-hosted by Hostelling USA, San Diego Council and the Uptown Optimist Club of San Diego. Proceeds will benefit youth education and outreach programs for both nonprofit organizations. For more information, call (619) 338-9981.
