The Pacific Beach/Taylor Library offers various activities for children and adults this spring. Residents are welcomed for daily and weekly programs, as well as special events, like an eclipse viewing party. Check out what’s happening on Cass Street and make connections in the neighborhood.
“The library is all about helping to make connections, between people and services,” said Christina Wainwright, branch manager of the library. Pacific Beach/Taylor Library serves as a place where both children and adults can relax and join the community.
“We are grateful that we can help parents feel empowered to help their kids with their developing literacy skills, caregivers to find other adults they can talk with, and help with reducing the stress of taxes,” added Wainwright.
Eclipse Viewing Party
When: April 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Age group: All ages.
A solar eclipse will occur on April 8 during the morning, starting at 10:03 a.m. and ending at 12:23 p.m. There will be approximately 62% coverage in San Diego. A craft activity for kids will also be offered.
Spring into STEAM: Portable Planetarium – Explore the Night Sky
When: April 12 from 4-5 p.m.
Age group: 9 to 12.
The library will show kids the universe as part of their annual Spring into STEAM initiative. Children can learn about the solar system by visiting constellations and galaxies with the portable planetarium. *Registration is required in advance on the library website.
Vegan Cooking: National Pecan Day
When: April 14 from 2-3 p.m.
Age group: From middle school age to older adults.
Residents can learn recipes made with pecans using plant-based food products and ingredients on April 14, National Pecan Day. The first 30 people can also taste samples: maple oat pecan scones, creamy chipotle pasta, and pecan pie. This program will be held once a month until May. *Registration is required in advance on the library website.
Ukulele Time
When: April 4 and 18 from 3-5:30 p.m.
Age group: From teens to older adults.
All skill levels are welcome to the ukulele class twice a month. Every participant gains a chance to lead a song while strumming – as they wish. The class will be presented by David Lombardi from Hou`oli Strummers Meetup Group.

Outdoor Programs for Kids
Outdoor Kids Dance Party: on April 3 and 17 from 10-10:30 a.m.
Outdoor Toddler Storytime: on April 10 and 24 from 10-10:30 a.m.
Age group: From babies to preschoolers.
The Dance Party and Storytime occur every other week twice a month on Wednesdays. Families can enjoy either twisting and shouting or simple stories and songs depending on the week. Activities will take place in Taylor Greene, the park next to the library.
Including these popular programs, the library offers more than 20 activities every month. “Our most well-attended programs are the toddler programs on Wednesday mornings. Over 100 people attend each week,” said Wainwright.
“We’ve had parents and caregivers tell our Youth Services Librarian how much they enjoy the activities. Many come inside the library afterward to check out more books for their little ones,” added Wainwright.
For adult programs, Free Tax Prep on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. is the most popular, which is offered by volunteers from AARP Tax-Aide. Many people in the community can participate as they aren’t limited based on income or age. Residents can have their federal and state taxes prepared for free.
Enjoy your free time at the library with craft classes, playing chess at the beach, storytime in other languages, gardening experiences, and more.
